Who this is for

Improvisers who are moving into coaching, and coaches who are already running rooms but want to sharpen what they do. If you have been asked to coach a team and felt slightly out of your depth, this is built for you.

Around six months of improv behind you is a good guide rather than a hard rule. If you are near that mark and keen, you will be fine. You don't need to have coached before.

What we'll cover

Five sessions that build on each other, ending with you coaching the room.

  1. 1

Foundations of effective teaching and coaching

What actually makes a coach useful. Reading a room, holding a group, and the difference between teaching improv and just running exercises you liked as a student.

  2. 2

    Lesson planning and structuring sessions

Building a session that goes somewhere. Choosing exercises that serve a point, sequencing them so each one sets up the next, and knowing what to cut when the room needs something else.

  3. 3

Providing empowering feedback and addressing challenges

Side-coaching that helps mid-scene, and notes that land after it. Plus the hard bits: the player who dominates, the one who has gone quiet, and the group that has lost its nerve.

  4. 4

Developing your own teaching style and continuous improvement

Finding the version of coaching that sounds like you rather than an impression of your favourite teacher, and building a habit of getting better at it.

  5. 5

    Coaching exercises showcase

You run the exercises you have designed, with the group as your players and the room as your feedback. Depending on numbers we may run this session longer so everyone gets proper time.

Expect to be on your feet

This one is hands-on. You'll run exercises throughout the five weeks, and you should also be ready to play the improviser when techniques are being demonstrated or when someone else is leading the group. That swap between coaching and playing is a lot of where the learning happens.

What you'll leave with

A coaching philosophy that is yours

A clear sense of what you value in a room and how you want to run one, instead of borrowing someone else's voice.

Exercises you designed yourself

A set of custom-built exercises you have written, run with real players, and refined off the back of what actually happened.

Notes that land

A practical approach to side-coaching and feedback that improvisers can act on, including for the tricky rooms.
